This sprint tournament was a reminder that match sprint is all about the fight man against man and not a time trial with an attached tournament. However at the beginning it seemed to be all so clear: only three riders Lei Zhang, Michaël d'Almeida and François Pervis stayed below the 10.3 sec line and it looked like those three would fight outthe podiums positions.
The round of the last 16th everthing went according to plan. However there was a sign of big things to come: 8th seeded German Max Levy was beating 9th placed Australian Jason Niblett with a time of 9.926 for the last 200m which was 1/2 a second faster than his time during qualification.
The quarter final was then the end for the fast Chinese. Max Levy was defeating
Lei Zhang and Kiwi Eddy Dawkins the fourth fastest qualifier Miao Zhang. D'Almeida and Pervis joined them in the semi finals.
Now Eddy Dawkins was beating the German Keirin World Champion Levy while d'Almeida turned out to be the faster Frenchman of the night.
In the final Eddy Dawkins beat d'Almeida for his biggest win yet and Pervis won the Cofidis internal fight for bronze over Max Levy (who had just joined Cofidis a couple of weeks ago).

All the strong riders made it into the 2nd round even though some had to take the rep detour. Round 2 then had a number of surprises: the French duo Clara Sanchez and Claire Sandie and the 500 m time trial winner Willy Kanis didn't make it. But there were some up-and-coming riders in the final: Malayasia's Fatehah Mustapa (who was dq-ed in the final) and the dutch youngster Agnes Ronner. World Champion Shuang Guo took the win with Germany's Miriam Welte and Wai Sze Lee joining her on the podium.

This was an interesting qualification. The Chinese team was very strong in front of the home crowd, closely followed by the Australian Jayco team the French squat. Disappointing the Germans (who still won the over world cup in the team sprint) and the Cofidis team with German Keirin World Champion Max Levy.
