Beautiful weather and a smok'n fast field in San Jose last weekend for the Testarrosa Vineyards Velodrome Challenge. You got to love a race sponsored by a wine maker. The folks in the infield food and beverage area were living large.
The mens sprint field was headlined by peren
nial favorite Jimmy Watkins from SoCal and a red hot David Espinoza from Pennsylvania. Also Andy Williams from New Zealand (by way of Portland) had every intention of kicking ass and taking names. It didn't nearly stop there... it was a deeeeeep field. Deeper and faster then most Elite National Championship that I can remember. In the keirin final Jimmy gapped back a little bit in the middle of the pack and then caught everyone sleeping when he bolted through that gap and straight off the front where he stayed. Everyone else got stacked up behind Andy with Sam Milroy working hard around the outside for third. David got stuck in traffic mid pack and didn't get to play much in this one. Black Dog rider Giovanni Rey, yours truely, was feeling great after nearly winning a stacked 6-up first round ride with 4 of the top 8 seeds including David and Andy. Unfortunately, nearly winning and winning are not the same thing, and only one advances (David). In the rep round I fell pray to some questionable interpretations of starting rules, getting disqualified and sent home without getting to contest the race. Jimmy, Andy, Sam, David and the others will have to wait and wonder what a Black Dog's bite feels like ;)
The man meat was back out for the sprint tournament saturday 
morning. Jimmy, David, and TJ Mathieson essentially tied at an astounding 11.0 (for this track) 200m time. Hellyer Velodrome is plenty fast up to about 40 or 41 mph... but at that speed there is a sort of a wall that everyone hits as the tires start having to work very hard to get around the corner and speed gets scrubbed. Behind them Andy, Pete Billington, Sam and me. Things shuffled when the racing started. TJ was relegated and dropped down to 5th. Andy got himself disqualified for aggressive riding and Pete stepped up big time!!. The final, another big upset was David beating Jimmy. Pete beets Kevin Mansker for 3rd.
Oh yes, there were endurance racing and womens fields also... Dana Feiss rocked up hard in the womens sprints. Jame Carney showed everyone what a class rider looks like winning everything.... and Jason Allen, Jacob Duering, and Ben Jacques Maynes all dropped the hammer chasing Jame. Another highlight was Jnr threat Daniel Farinha also shining in the points race.
